Unauthorised use of MASK-ED by the Robert Gordon University
Page updated: 23rd February 2015
Social media anti stigma campaigners and those protesting against the use of prosthetics within mental health training had linked the innovation to the MASK ED system. It had been assumed by myself and many other campaigners (reasonably in my opinion) that the Robert Gordon University were affiliated to MASK ED as the technology and principle are the same and as the system is trademarked , the innovator was contacted directly.
I personally had tweeted to the communications officer on February 17th quoting and attaching the term ‘MASK ED’ to their use of prosthetics, the opportunity to correct me and the other protestors at that point was not taken.
Read all of the more recent communications between Robert Gordon University, Professor Kerry Reid Searl and myself on our ‘News and Updates’ page.
Part of my email read:
The ‘Robert Gordon University’ in Scotland had used the MASK-ED innovation within their training of mental health undergraduates and staff. Thousands took to social media protesting the use of prosthetic masks being used within the training of mental health staff.
The latest Update:
23rd February, 08:21
A statement has since been received from the Rober Gordon University, here it is:
Your e mail has been passed on to the Head of the Nursing and Midwifery School for their information and attention.
You will receive a response from them shortly. In the mean time I would like to take this opportunity to assure you that The Robert Gordon University School of Nursing and Midwifery has absolutely no connection with Mask Ed and at no time have we claimed any association in any of our public statements.
The Robert Gordon University
What do I think? The MASK ED innovation is being used, like it or not, the theory and use are the same. What protestors would like to know is:
- Are the masks being withdrawn permanently from use within the Robert Gordon Universities mental health training and
- What evidence base was used and what consultation was had and with whom in order to integrate the use of prosthetics within mental health training in a safe and considerate manner.

Thank you for the email.
I am deeply concerned that Mask Ed has been linked to this university in Aberdeen.
They have not done the training required of individuals who use the system. A two day workshop is required in order for people to do this successfully.
There are significant risks with the technique when training has not occurred.
I have written to this university seeking a statement that they are not affiliated with Mask Ed as the bad press has caused much damage to our reputation.
Mask Ed is a complex technique and when the pedagogy is followed the learning can be fabulous. We have had fabulous results. The most important aspect is when the teaching emerges through the character because always the character has a platform for teaching. For example my darling character Muriel Moore is a retired matron and is always supporting and directing students in the scenarios. The characters are always created to be gifted individuals with a background that enables them to be present with students and teach.
The way I see it is that the given university are creating characters with conditions but have missed key elements.
We have used Mask Ed with mental health in a very very cautious way and extremely carefully supervised by me. I would be happy to talk to you when I return from Japan. I too share your concerns and again reiterate that this given university in Aberdeen is not associated in any way with Mask Ed.
We have several universities in the UK whom we have worked with through the HEA and Geoff Glover. All are doing well but they have been trained in the technique. Thank you so much for emailing me. I shall be in touch on my return from Japan. I am teaching mask ed here at the moment.

Statement from Monarch Butterfly:
Whilst the feedback and statement from Professor Kerry Reid-Searl the innovator behind MASK-ED is an important development in the #MHmasks story it is not in any way mentioned on this website to deflect from what is important. What is important is a transparent and open dialogue that takes into consideration the views of those with lived experience of mental health difficulty. It would also be interesting to know if the use of the MASK-ED/KRS system within mental health training is supported by evidence based research and consultation.
